Bhutan has migrated its National Digital Identity system to the Ethereum blockchain, making it the first country to do so. This move builds on previous integrations with Polygon and Hyperledger Indy, with full transition expected by Q1 2026 under the Digital Drukyul program. The system allows citizens to manage and verify their credentials securely on a public network, combining decentralization with national governance norms for auditability, resilience, and privacy. This historic step aligns with Bhutan’s goal of creating a trust-based digital society and positions the country as a pioneer in decentralized public infrastructure.
