The US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan is reducing its focus on crypto crimes following recent high-profile convictions, including FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried. The shift was confirmed by Scott Hartman, co-chief of the securities and commodities task force for the SDNY, during a legal conference. This decision comes amid changes in leadership at the office, with former SEC chair Jay Clayton nominated to replace Damian Williams as U.S. Attorney. Clayton’s tenure at the SEC was marked by a more restrained approach to crypto regulation compared to the current SEC chair, Gary Gensler. The decision to scale back focus on crypto cases could indicate a change in enforcement priorities as the industry stabilizes after a turbulent period.
