Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong believes that artificial intelligence will increase demand for cryptocurrency rather than replace it. He argues that AI agents will use programmable money for autonomous transactions, and that AI growth is linked to programmable money. Coinbase has introduced Base, USDC, and x402 as part of its Agentic Finance strategy. Armstrong rejects calls for crypto companies to focus solely on AI, stating that AI agents need programmable money to operate effectively. Coinbase’s model allows software to conduct transactions without human intervention, and the company has introduced products such as Agentic Wallets and Coinbase for Agents to facilitate AI transactions. Chainalysis reported over 100 million x402 payments on Base, with meme-coin farming driving early growth. Coinbase is expanding its agent tools, with products like Agentic.market allowing software agents to purchase services using USDC. The market for AI-driven blockchain payments is still in its early stages, and Coinbase will release its second-quarter 2026 results on July 30.
